What is a “bleed” and why is it important for printing?
A bleed is the area of your artwork that extends beyond the final size of your printed piece. It ensures that when your item is trimmed to its final size, there won’t be any unprinted white edges.
Think of it like this: if your background color or image goes all the way to the edge of your design, you’ll want to extend that color or image at least ⅛ inch (0.125") beyond the trim line on all sides. That way, slight shifts during the trimming process won’t leave unwanted borders.
Here’s a quick breakdown:
-
Trim Size: The final size of your printed piece (e.g., 5" x 7").
-
Bleed Size: The file you submit should be 5.25" x 7.25", allowing for 0.125" of bleed on each side.
-
Safe Zone: Keep all important text and images at least 0.125" inside the trim size so they don’t get cut off.
Why it matters:
Without a proper bleed, your finished product might have uneven white edges — especially noticeable on designs with backgrounds or images that touch the edge.
